What’s your relationship like with your device(s)?
No really. Are you spending more time in the world of ‘social’ than the real one? (I was)
I run an online business. My entire livelihood is dependent on everything that’s an @apple these days, so when I realised that I was spending more time here, than anywhere else, I had to make some big changes to make this choice of work, work for me.
I’m still playing around with ways to build and engage with my community online while keeping myself in the ‘real world’, and here is what’s come up for me so far:
– Limit the scroll!! It is an energy, time, mentally draining, sucker. Set clear boundaries with your time here.
– Create before you consume (which I learnt from one of my favourite authors @marieforleo) consuming first is the quickest way to kill your own creativity.
– Do not pick up your phone first thing in the morning. No emails. No Socials. No messages. No excuses.
– And just as important, do not scroll before bed. It will signal to your brain you’re not ready for sleep, and your mind/body will take more time to down-regulate robbing you of a good night’s sleep.
– DO schedule time for your emails, messages, and engagement with content that lifts you, inspires you or supports others. And for business owners DO schedule your content in advance.
– Move all devices outside of the bedroom, and go back to a good old fashion alarm clock.
I have yet to perfect this. Some days demand different things. But I am already feeling so much more clarity, freedom, and better focus throughout my day from being more mindful of how much time I spend in this space.
I’m interested to know, what works for you. Is there anything else you’ve found helpful to limit your screen time here?
